Faculty
Our faculty members are active in research and have received external support from a variety of agencies such as the
National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department
of Energy, NASA, the American Cancer Society, and the Dreyfus Foundation. Our
research work covers many areas of experimental and theoretical chemistry, spanning the traditional areas of chemistry. Many of our faculty have research programs with foci on the inderdisciplinary areas of materials and bio-related
research.
Graduate and Professional Programs
SIUC offers master's and doctor's degrees in chemistry. Currently, approximately 50
students are enrolled in these programs. The graduate programs of the Department can be generally classified into four
areas of emphasis: Analytical, Biochemistry, Materials, Organic, and Physical though there is
considerable overlap of faculty research interests among these areas. Detailed description of the faculty can be found listed alphabetically and by research area.
Additional Resources
Facilities. Library facilities are more than adequate and are augmented by an interlibrary
loan system. Online searching of literature and citation databases is available via
Scifinder (Chem. Abstracts and Medline) and Web of Science. The campus machine shop is available for in-house design and
repair of equipment. Excellent NMR and MS facilities are available, as well as excellent optical and electron microscopy facilities at the IMAGE center.
Financial Assistance. Virtually all students who are offered admission to the department are also offered support in the form of a teaching assisstantship or a research assistantship. Exceptional applicants may be eligible for fellowships. The monthly stipend for these appointments is comparable to
other universities and is subject to periodic increases. Importanly, tuition is waived for students having assistantships or fellowships.
Students are assessed fees by the University which cover the costs of health
insurance, access to campus recreational facilities, reduced admission to
athletic and cultural events etc.
The cost of living in Carbondale is low, as is typical throughout the Midwest
United States. Housing costs vary with the type of accomodations desired. Local
private housing generally begins at about $500 per month for a furnished
apartment. On-campus apartment housing is available with prices beginning at approximately $500 per month. Visit University Housing to apply online or for more information.
The costs of study (fees, housing, living expenses, no tuition,
etc.) are generally comfortably accomodated by the assistantship stipend.
American students who have completed applications may also request funds from
the department to cover cost of travel (partial or complete) to visit the
campus prior to enrollment. Students can request loans from the department to
ease initial financial burdens prior to receiving initial assistantship
stipends.
Morris Library. Outside the classroom, students' chief resource is Morris
Library, a subject-division library featuring LINKS, a remotely accessible
electronic service providing access to library catalogs, abstracting and
indexing services, full text databases, and local and national technological
resources and services. Students, faculty, and other researchers are able to
consult some 2 million volumes, over 2.5 million units of microform, and about
13,000 current periodicals and serials. The library is a depository for
federal, state, and United Nations documents and houses the archives for
Illinois' southernmost 22 counties as part of the Illinois Regional Depository
system. Special Collections contains internationally known manuscript and book
collections in American philosophy, first amendment freedoms, and modern
American, British, and Irish literature.
The University
Southern Illinois University is a multi-campus institution enrolling over
35,000 students in programs ranging from two-year technical to doctoral and
professional curricula. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale offers
academic programs leading to associate, bachelor's, master's, doctor's, and
professional degrees.
Carbondale has been cited as one of the fifty most desirable places to live in
the U.S. The mid-south climate is ideal for year-around outdoor activities,
with the Shawnee National Forest, a number of state parks and natural areas,
and several recreational lakes in easy driving distance. The University's
Student Recreation Center houses an olympic-size pool, weight rooms, and game
courts of all kinds, as well as diet and exercise programs and equipment that
can be checked out for outdoor recreation.
