This web site is meant for chemistry and science instructors who have adopted or are considering adopting our lab manual. As such, it is an ancilliary site to Houghton Mifflin's online ordering system, BiblioBase®. It is maintained by the authors and hosted on a server operated by the College of Science at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Experiments in General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry is a collection of 56 laboratory experiments that cover general, organic, and biological chemistry. They are designed for introductory chemistry courses, especially for non-science majors, at universities and colleges. Many experiments are also suitable for high school courses, particularly for advanced-placement courses.
Our instructional approach, developed over the course of several years, combines a number of different techniques and methodologies, including collaborative and cooperative methods (or teamwork as students know it). The experiments can be adapted to a variety of settings and used with different textbooks.
A notable novelty is the modularization of experiments, an approach that offers you the capability to mix and match experiments. The modular approach works really well in combination with teamwork.
An innovation made possible by our publisher, the College Division of Houghton Mifflin Company, is using web and computer technologies to let you produce your own custom manuals. You can easily define different manuals for different classes or semesters and even include your own experiments and other materials.
This site is a collection of materials and information to help you take better advantage of our experiments and create better chemistry courses. A subset of the online information is also available from Houghton Mifflin as a printed Instructor's Resource Manual. We hope that this site will expand as sort of a bulletin board for instructors that adopt our experiments.
You can preview the actual writeup for each experiment online either from this site or from BiblioBase.
